Blueberry Season is OPEN, but please read on first…
The timing of the late freeze this spring was extremely unfortunate. Our bushes have filled in and grown so much that we were sure this would be our best year yet! Despite our TLC and encouraging words to the plants, there are only a few ripe berries out there for this weekend. There will be more ripe berries as the summer progresses, but it doesn’t seem that many will be ripe all at once. We are declaring the Minka Farm blueberry season OPEN, but… please understand it’s not going to be as good as last year.
It’s been pretty wet since the downpour on Wednesday, so the grass is not as groomed as we’d like (although the mosquitoes are quite happy). So, if you are as desperate as we are for fresh-picked berries, please come prepared to berry hunt, wear solid footwear, and bring some insect repellent – just in case. If you are coming from a long distance, it pains me to say that it’s not worth the drive, yet.
I keep in my own mind that even though Mother Nature has not given us an ideal blueberry year, she has given us a good grass year – our cows are fat and happy and we are close to having enough hay put away for next winter! Oh, and there seem to be a LOT of pawpaws for later this year!
